Five charity bingo halls are temporarily closing as COVID-19 surges in Saskatchewan.
Amalgamated Charities Inc., operator of Sask Bingo, announced on its website that its halls in Saskatoon, Regina and Moose Jaw will be closed for now.
The affected bingo halls are:
- Centennial Bingo – Regina
- ClubWest Bingo – Saskatoon
- Bingo Palace – Regina
- Leisure Time Bingo – Moose Jaw
- Fantasyland Bingo – Regina
President Patsy Warren said the organization made the decision for health and safety reasons amid climbing case numbers. She said tighter restrictions also made it impossible to continue operating.
Bingo halls all closed in the spring when the pandemic first began. They were allowed to reopen in July with safety measures in place. However, under revised regulations introduced last week, bingo halls were allowed a maximum of 30 patrons at a time. Warren said this was not enough people to cover expenses and return a profit to the 104 charitable organizations that raise money through the halls.
“There’s just not enough money left. We can’t make a go with 30 people.”

Warren said the corporation has also had to lay off its staff of about 100 people. She said no decision on reopening will be made until the province is able to revisit the 30-person capacity limit. For now, she said customers have been understanding in online messages following news of the closure.
She said she hopes the shutdown won’t last long and that people will feel safe to return once COVID-19 cases are back under control.
“We just hope that they’re with us when we’re able to reopen again.”
